Don’t retire from something… retire toward something

After more than 30 years in the corporate world leading operations and transformations, I have learned something powerful that I now share with leaders navigating transitions:

Successful transitions do not happen when someone decides to leave.
They happen when someone decides who they want to become next.

There is a profound emotional difference between these two narratives:

"I am leaving something"
"I am building something new"

The first creates fear.
The second creates purpose.

This applies not only to retirement but to any life transition:
• Career change
• Professional reinvention
• Ending relationships
• Leaving leadership roles
• Any moment where growth requires letting go

The people who navigate transitions best are not those who resist change.

They are those who design it.
